Edgefield Police seek arrest of Federal Prison guard
web
posted January 25, 2008
EDGEFIELD – The
Edgefield Police
Department is seeking to take a Federal Prison guard into custody but
they are not having any luck locating the man. William Arthur Copeland,
39, of Pebble Lane, Aiken, has four warrants for his arrest for
allegedly threatening several public officials at the Federal Prison on
Gary Hill Road in Edgefield. Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter said
they are hoping Mr. Copeland will turn himself in to authorities.
According to police reports, Copeland made threats to fellow employees
and supervisors dating back to October and ending on Tuesday. The
threats were laced with vulgarities and Copeland’s victims said he
phones the prison, “when he gets drunk,” police reporters state.
In one of the reported events Mr. Copeland came to the prison in an
apparent attempt to follow through with his one of his threats until he
was given a ride home by another employee at the request of a shift
supervisor. The report states Copeland was intoxicated at the time.
On Tuesday Copeland called the prison again threatening supervisors
telling them he was “going to get them and they need to watch their
backs,” police reports state. Due to the past behavior and Copeland’s
willingness to come to the prison to “make true with his threats”
police were notified and warrants were issued later in the day.
This is not the first brush with the law for Mr. Copeland. In late
October of 2007 Copeland fought with Aiken Police when they tried to
arrest him for a gross intoxication / disorderly conduct charge. In
that case Copeland was accused of harassing at least two children and
using racial slurs during the verbal altercation. According to a report
by the
Aiken Standard several officers were needed to subdue Copeland
and police added a felony charge of resisting arrest.
No information was available on the status of those charges in Aiken
County.
Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter said Copeland was expected to
arrive at work at the prison on Thursday morning but did not show up.
“We’ve tried to make contact with him,” Carter said adding that Aiken
Police have also been attempting to apprehend him. “Maybe if he sees
his face,” in the news, “he might turn himself in.”
Threatening a pubic official is a felony.

2007 arrest.
