Federal Prison guard arrested; held on $20,000 in bonds
web
posted January 26, 2008
EDGEFIELD – An
Edgefield Federal Prison
guard has been arrested and is being held on $20,000 in surety bonds
for four counts of threatening public
officials. William A. Copeland
was arrested Friday morning in Aiken after he made contact with the
Federal Prison on Gary Hill Road in Edgefield. Aiken
Police were notified of the phone call by the Edgefield Police
Department and Copeland was taken into custody without incident a short
time later at his home, Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter said.
After the arrest Mr. Copeland was transported to the Edgefield County
line by Aiken authorities and handed over to Edgefield Police at the
intersection of Highway 25 and I-20.
Edgefield Police said Copeland was, at the time of arrest, bonded out
on a felony resisting arrest charge as a result of an October 2007
arrest in Aiken County prior to the Edgefield incident.
Federal Prison Officials in Edgefield were unavailable for comment on
Friday; however, Edgefield Police said Copeland was being held out of
the “general population” of jail inmates due to his current status as a
corrections officer for safety reasons.
Chief Carter said that according to information provided to him
Copeland was still considered an employee of the Federal Prison in
spite of the arrests. There were no indications as to what disciplinary
actions would follow Copeland’s second felony arrest in recent months.
