Local Haiti Relief Group grows in numbers

web posted January 26, 2010
EDGEFIELD – Time is running out to join the local disaster relief team that will be departing next month for Haiti. Michael Medlock, who is heading up the team, said ten people have confirmed to go and three more are “likely” to join. The team is asked not to exceed twenty members. The deadline for confirming the trip is this Wednesday, January 27.

Mr. Medlock said last week after our initial report was published that his phones began “to ring off the hook” and by the end of the day the group had grown to six. On Monday Mr. Medlock was even more upbeat as the group continues to grow and the phones keep ringing.

Those not able to go on the trip can still make tax deductible donations to the First Baptist Church in Edgefield or Antioch Baptist Church, who have members joining the effort.

The group will arrive in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic on Saturday, February 13 and stay the night before departing on Sunday to Juan Dolio, which is on the border. Once arriving, “We will purchase food, water, and medical supplies,” Medlock said, before going into Jacmel, Haiti. Some of the $1,200 cost required to make the trip will go towards purchasing food, water, and medical supplies.

The team will arrive back home on February 19.

SCORE International, a mission’s organization, will be organizing trips for seven consecutive weeks starting on January 30 so if you miss this trip you can still sign up for another trip to help in the relief effort.

Though it is not required, Mr. Medlock said it is advisable to have the following vaccinations prior to departure: Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Typhoid.

To inquire about the mission trip call Mr. Medlock at his office at 803-637-3800. Donations can be made at the Edgefield First Baptist Church at 212 Church Street, Edgefield SC, 29824 or call the church office at 803-637-6139 or Antioch Baptist Church, 1843 Highway 23 W, Edgefield SC, 29824, 803-637-3977.
