The Red Hill Houndsmen Association announces PKC and UKC coon and squirrel hunts web posted January 29, 2007 EDGEFIELD – The Red Hill Houndsmen Association will be hosting qualifying coon and squirrel hunts beginning on Thursday, February 1 and continuing through February 24. The hunts will be held from the Brunson’s Community Center, Edgefield. The hunts are PKC and UKC sanctioned events. PKC Coon Hunt to be held at the Brunson’s Community Center - Edgefield, South Carolina, February 1st (Thursday). The local PKC contact is Rodney Boatwright at 803 643-3134 or 803 – 649 - 4997. A second hunt will be held February 9th (Friday) which will be a UKC Coon Hunt, Entry fee is $20.00 February 24th (Saturday) UKC World Qualifying Squirrel Hunt, Entry fee $25.00 Local UKC contact Wayne Agner at 803 - 637- 6219 UKC events will be held monthly through May 2007 The Red Hill Houndsmen Association is approximately 30 years old. The group meets on the 4th Thursday of the month unless otherwise noted. This is a family orientated group that has youth hunts, promotes safety and conservation. No alcohol, gambling or illegal drugs allowed on site. Advance registration for hunts is not required. A typical UKC squirrel hunt is as follows. Most people show up about 5:00 am and have a hearty breakfast. The entry fees range from $20.00 to $25.00 dollars. Food is extra. Dogs must be UKC registered; Cur and Fiest breeds can be registered on site if all requirements are met. All competitors must be registered by 6 am. 3 dogs are grouped together as a cast. A guide takes the group to the hunts site. A judge keeps score of each dog and time on the cast. A 2 hour time limit of hunting is set for each cast. Clock may be stopped to try a new hunt site if quarry cannot be found. Travel time to and from hunt sites is not included. A competitor can be both guide and judge. All casts must turn in score card before noon. Scores are tallied and trophies up to tenth place are given out. In an elimination hunt the winner of each cast comes back to compete again that afternoon. The top five dogs will be eligible to compete at the UKC World Squirrel Hunt. A UKC coon hunt has a few differences, 4 dogs go out in each cast at 8pm and arrive back around 1:30 am. Dinner is served prior to the hunt.
