ERA Theatre Oyster Roast Fundraiser a success

web posted February 2, 2009
EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield Regional Arts (ERA) held it Oyster Roast fundraiser on the Edgefield Town Square Saturday with a great turnout in their drive to raise $256,000 to purchase the historic former Edgefield Advertiser building in an attempt to convert it into a Performing Arts Theatre. Organizers sold at least 100 of the $15 tickets before then event and an additional 30 to 40 tickets at the gate by 2 pm.

In addition to the ticket sales organizers said several people made cash donations to the fundraiser during the event. Laurel Blossom, one of those spearheading the fundraising, said she was “thrilled” with the turnout.

Butler Derrick and others roasted twenty bushels of oysters during the event.

The group needs to raise the $256,000 to purchase the building by May of this year. Although grants are being sought, most grant notifications are not made until September.

All donations towards the project are tax deductible.

When completed, the theatre will have a capacity of 362 and will allow for theater and movies, and will lend itself as well to graduations, lecture series, literary readings, choral and instrumental recitals, contests, dance programs, school plays, other community events of various kinds, and convenient meetings for groups both large and small.

Incorporated into the design of the lobby will be a series of kiosks to honor the building’s role in the history of The Edgefield Advertiser, the oldest continuously published newspaper in South Carolina.

For more information contact Laurel Blossom at 803-640-0625. Any artist interested in joining ERA may contact Pamela Urban-Moore at 803-637-6763.

EdgefieldDaily.com has agreed to place an online donation link to the ERA once it has been completed.
