Charges Pending Against Naked Man with Baby: Suspect Identified

web posted February 8, 2013

EDGEFIELD – The man at the center of a bizarre episode in Merriwether Wednesday night has been identified as 31-year-old Carl Thompson Grove, of Landing Drive in North Augusta. Deputies raced to the scene following a 911 call of a naked man with a baby trying to break into a home and then leaving the naked baby on the side of the road and walking away towards traffic.

A female deputy was the first to arrive and started after the man until she heard a baby cry and saw it inching towards the roadway. She scooped up the baby and wrapped in her duty jacket and placed it in the patrol vehicle to stay warm until EMS could arrive on the scene.

Meanwhile Grove continued walking eastbound until two citizens stopped and confronted Groves by repeatedly ordering him to the ground. A second deputy arrived and ended up tazing Groves twice before he complied with orders to place his hands behind his back and was handcuffed.

He was transported to MCG and is said to remain hospitalized at this time.

Edgefield County Sheriff's Chief Investigator Randy Doran said Grove and his wife were currently separated, but no Family Court papers had been filed and Grove and his wife still have shared custody. Inv. Doran said Grove picked his daughter up from a daycare in Columbia County without his wife knowing. When the wife learned he had the child she contacted the Columbia County Sheriff's Office and was told he had a right to pick up his daughter.

It was then she began calling Grove to check on the daughter and he would not answer her calls. She did not know where the baby was until she was contacted by Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies.

Inv. Doran said he will be seeking warrants for felony child endangerment, indecent exposure, breaking and entering a vehicle and possibly attempted burglary. "I haven't talked to the Solicitors yet, but I'm going to charge him with everything I can," Doran said.

Following Grove's release from the hospital he will be brought to the Edgefield County Detention Center to be booked into custody.

The red Jeep was said to have been located at a friend's house. At this time it is unknown if that friend lives in the Merriwether area. The case remains under investigation and additional charges could be filed pending the outcome of the investigation.

The baby girl was uninjured.
