Car Chase Lands Aiken Man Behind Bars on Multiple Charges

web posted February 9, 2013

EDGEFIELD – An Edgefield Policeman on patrol spotted a vehicle with an expired tag and when he attempted to stop the vehicle the driver sped away and led officers on a short chase where the driver tried to "ram" one of the patrol vehicles. The driver, Richard Simpkins Jr., of Aiken County, decided it would be better to run that stop.

A short chase ensued and once he finally pulled over he was said to be a "habitual offender" and was reportedly intoxicated at the time of arrest. He registered a 0.10 on a breathalyzer test, and the DUI is just one of the many charges he faces.

Simpkins if facing charges for DUI, driving under suspension 3rd offence, fail to stop for blue lights and siren, child endangerment and an ABC alcohol violation.

An additional charge for the attempt to ram a police cruiser is also being considered.

He was booked into custody at the Edgefield County Detention Center and is expected to have a bond hearing Saturday morning. The vehicle was towed from the scene, His female passenger and the child were taken to a public location where they were picked up by friends or family members.

The chase ended just past Star Road on Augusta Road heading southbound on highway 25. Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies were also involved in the pursuit.
