Calliham’s TV and Appliance under foreclosure
web
posted February 13, 2009
EDGEFIELD – The Calliham TV and Appliance
Building and property that was the focus of a much debated proposed
purchase by the county seems to have been all for nothing as prior to
the county council voting to drop their option to buy, foreclosure
proceedings were already filed in court records. Records show the
proceedings were filed in December of last year and the property could
be sold on the steps of the Edgefield County Courthouse next month to
the highest bidder.
Fletcher F. Lawrence Jr. of Greenwood has foreclosed on several
properties owned by J. P. (James) Calliham in addition to the property
where the family owned appliance and furniture store has operated for
half a century.
According to information obtained by EdgefieldDaily.com and court
records, the properties could be put up for sale in the first two weeks
of March and most likely includes properties on Country Club Road,
Butler Street, Addison Street, as well as the store property on Penn
Street.
A Special Referee apparently has been appointed to oversee the sale.
Douglas L. Bell, Esquire, of the McDonald Patrick Baggett Poston &
Hemphill, LLP law firm in Greenwood is representing Mr. Lawrence in the
matter.
The store remained open for business as of Thursday.
The county sought to purchase the Penn Street property for $425,000 to
expand county offices and the future expansion of the Sheriff’s Office
and County Jail which is adjacent to the property. The Edgefield County
Council voted in January to withdraw their offer.
Additional reports will follow as more information is obtained in the
matter. A “Notice of Sale” will have to be published in at least one of
the local papers for three consecutive weeks prior to the public sale.
