World renowned Jack Hanna attends benefit for All God's Creatures in
Edgefield
web

EDGEFIELD – Jack
Hanna, world renowned
animal expert and star of Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures, was in
Edgefield Wednesday evening for a benefit to help All God’s Creatures
pet rescue raise money to build a shelter for Edgefield County. Mr.
Hanna said he could not believe there was not a shelter in the county,
“and that’s why I’m here.”
Mr. Hanna, or Jack as he said he wanted to be called, said when he
learned of the great things AGC was doing he wanted to help the pet
rescue bring a shelter to the area. “I love this area,” Mr. Hanna
said, “it’s gorgeous,” adding that the concern of AGC’s Founder Denise
Holcomb, and the board of directors, says a lot about the people in
Edgefield County. “You are helping much more than the animals, it’s
about people,” Mr Hanna said. “It represents our society.”
Mr. Hanna told of his travels across the globe and the way animals are
treated in different countries. “What I’ve seen is beyond
indescribable,” he said. He noted that while in the Middle East the
youngsters he spoke with had no idea what a family pet was, “95% had
never even heard of a pet. Now look at what’s happening there now.” In
his opinion it was easy to tell that cultures that value human life
because they have pets. Those that don’t are the most violent across
the globe.
“Animals give
unconditional love which is more important than anything
I think,” Mr. Hanna said adding the family pet is a “part of your
family.” Every family needs a pet if they have children and it is
possible. “Some people can’t because of an illness, but it teaches love
and responsibility,” and other values the children will carry with them
throughout life. Mr. Hannah said “that puppy or kitten” is a great
learning tool that he uses in reaching people about conservation.
“I teach conservation in a fun way,” he said. Each program, speech, or
appearance is designed to reach a different audience and it is his hope
that he can give each person watching or present “something to take
away with them” when they leave. It is his hope that part of what he
leaves behind from his visit to Edgefield County is the proceeds for
All God’s Creatures to build a shelter for this area.
Over 200 attended the fundraiser by purchasing advance tickets at $150
a piece. A silent action was also held at the event attended by many
local and area notables and dignitaries such as Edgefield Mayor Ken
Durham and Sheriff Adell Dobey.
Mrs. Holcomb said she could not express the appreciation she has for
Mr. Hanna agreeing to attend the fundraiser, “there are not words to
describe how much it means,” she said. The ticket sales of $150 each,
with over 200 attending the event, raised over $30,000.
The proposed shelter (pictured above) will be built in Johnston on two
acres on Hardy
Place Road.
