Health Fair to cover all matters of the heart

web posted February 18, 2009
EDGEFIELD – County residents young and old - and all ages in between - can expect to receive their fill on all medical matters of the heart when the Edgefield County Hospital hosts next Thursday's Health Fair.

The event, which will be held both indoors and outdoors (weather permitting) from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., will offer a broad range of vitally important information - from free blood pressure and blood sugar testing, vouchers for the first 25 people who would like a free Cholesterol test, free Carotid Doppler Screenings, free vein consultations with former ECH Emergency Room head Dr. Paul Espinoza, and much more.

There will also be face painting for children, healthy snacks and door prizes.

Peach Tree Medical Center's Dr. Beth Gordineer says the Health Fair - which will pull in medical professionals from across the CSRA - has been a goal of the hospital staff for some time.

"We've wanted to do something like this for a while," she said. "We're very excited that it's finally here. There will be lots of information for adults and children. People may not want to see or visit every exhibit, but they will be able to find things that will be of interest to them. The staff at the hospital has been great."

The hospital's Director of Nursing, Cheryl Faust, has been organizing the event.
"We're very excited about this event," she said. "Each (hospital) department is going to focus on an area of the heart and heart health (February is Heart Health Awareness Month). We want to help with community awareness and every department here has been more than eager to help out. This event is going to cover all areas of heart health and just be a real informative event for the community."

Weather permitting, the Health Fair will also have an MCG helicopter on site for viewing, as well as local ambulance crews. There will be information to aid residents in their attempts to quit smoking, important nutritional information and the benefits of physical fitness and Heart Risk assessments.

No matter the information need - from advice on medications (local pharmacists will be on hand) to needed information on types of cardiac rehabilitation - the Health fair will have the heart covered.

"We want everyone to come out," Dr. Beth added. "There will be something for everyone."

Contact Cheryl Faust at 803-637-1100 for more information.
