A close call: Tractor-trailer tires stopped by tree
web
posted February 18, 2009
EDGEFIELD – Charlie
Turner has lived
quietly in his home on Bauskett St. since 1960 and never experienced
anything quite as bizarre as the strange event which occurred three
weeks ago tomorrow. It was just after 1:30 p.m. and he and his
daughter, Edna Sue Bush, were sitting in the living room watching
television. Suddenly, they heard a loud sound he describes as a "big
BOOM!" Instinct told them a crash had just taken place in front of the
home. But when they exited the house there was nothing there.
"We jumped right up and ran out of the house when we heard that noise,
it sounded like something hitting together, but we didn't see a car or
a truck anywhere," Mr. Turner said. "We thought there had been a wreck,
but we looked around and there was just nothing out there."
So they went back inside.
It wasn't until later, when Edna Sue went back outside to hang some
clothes, that they learned just how fortunate they'd been in those few
seconds just after the loud commotion. What she found was astonishing -
two tractor trailer tires (bent rim
and all) were wedged firmly into the grasp of three branches of a tree
in the front yard, stuck there like an outfielder with a fly ball.
"We went back inside
and thought nothing about it, but then she came in
and said there were some tires up in the tree," Turner said. "I came
out and looked and sure enough it was up there."
Taking a look at the culvert near the highway, they saw where the
concrete had been struck and crushed by an object - likely the rims of
the tires. From there, it appears the tires went airborne as there was
no damage to a car parked directly in front of the tree at that time.
The realization of what might have been was shocking.
"That thing went airborne and you're doggone right, if that tree hadn't
been there it could have tore up my camper and went right on through my
house," Mr. Turner said. "That's what I know."
The tires (Firestone FT 455 Radials) traveled approximately 40 feet
from the roadway, being stopped just 15 feet from the house at a height
of nearly 14 to 15 feet off of the ground. Edgefield Police came to the
home and took pictures of the tires, but the truck was not located.
Chief Ronnie Carter said it's possible the driver never even knew the
tires were ejected.
One thing is certain - Charlie Turner remains a grateful man. "I'm just
glad I wasn't checking the mail right then."
