Desperately needed records purchased by county now on "permanent loan" to private entity web posted February 23, 2007 EDGEFIELD – In July of 2006 County Archivist Patricia Glenn appeared before the Edgefield County Council requesting possession of the marriage license records housed in the Probate Court. After a discussion with Probate Court officials present at the meeting the County Council voted to order a set of the records on microfilm for the County Archives at a cost of $300 to $400. County Archivist Glenn stated at the July 2006 meeting how desperately she needed the records for the County Archives and said that being the County Archivist she should possess the records. The Probate Court, who owns the records, stated the records in question were mandated to be held by the court. County Councilman Everett Kitchens motioned for the microfilmed records to be bought by the county to end the dispute. Then the March issue of Quill, the “Official Publication of the Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society”, contained a “News and Notes” entry that reads in part; “Edgefield County Marriage Records on microfilm have been placed in the Tompkins Library on permanent loan by the generosity of Edgefield County Archivist, Tricia Price Glenn.” EdgefieldDaily.com will be examining why the desperate need of the County Archives to have the records is no longer a need and why the records are now housed by a private entity when purchased with county funds.
