Lt. Governor Andre Bauer to speak at Edgefield Alliance meeting
web
posted February 23, 2010
EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County Alliance invites you
to their monthly meeting Monday, March 1st, at 7:30 a.m. at Piedmont
Technical College, Edgefield Campus. South Carolina Lieutenant
Governor Andre Bauer will speak on the programs available for Senior
Citizens in South Carolina and Mr. John Shields of Shields Design, LLC
of Boston Massachusetts, will give an overview of the 2009 Master
Plan for the riverfront areas of Augusta and North Augusta.
Breakfast
will be served. A small donation of $5 to help cover the cost is
requested. Please RSVP to Linda Anderson at (803) 279-4138
so that we may be properly prepared for your attendance as space is
limited.
Lieutenant Governor Bauer was first elected Lieutenant Governor of
South Carolina in 2003 and is currently a candidate for Governor. Some
years ago Governor Mark Sanford appointed Bauer to head the South
Carolina Office on Aging In this role he has focused on helping the
senior citizens of the state by addressing many of the problems that
affect them Under his leadership, the Office on Aging has become a
one-stop shop for all seniors who need help cutting through federal and
state governmental "red tape."
Additionally he proposed and helped pass the state's first Geriatric
Physicians Act, a program which will attract more geriatric physicians
to South Carolina , improving care for seniors in our state.
Edgefield County has often been touted as an ideal area for retirement
for senior citizens and therefore it will be most interesting to hear
Lieutenant Governor Bauer’s perspective on seniors and how Edgefield
County can capitalize on providing services to this demographic group.
Mr. Bauer, a graduate of the University of South Carolina , was first
elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1996 where he
served until 1999 when he won election to the State Senate in a special
election. He ran for Lieutenant Governor in 2003 and was elected.
He was re-elected in 2006 and now is a candidate for Governor.
John Shields, president and founder of Shields Design, LLC of Boston,
Massachusetts, will also speak at the Alliance meeting. Mr. Shields
received his Bachelors of Architecture degree from the Georgia
Institute of Technology and a Master of City Planning in Urban Design
from Harvard University. He has spent over thirty years in planning,
urban design and architectural design, focusing on historic sites,
consumer environments, and mixed–use and residential developments in
the US and abroad.
Mr. Shields has much experience in this region as he was an author of
the original planning document for the South Carolina National Heritage
Corridor, as well as the Augusta Canal Master Plan. In 2009, he
completed the Master Plan commissioned by Augusta Tomorrow for the
riverfront areas of the cities of Augusta and North Augusta . He
is currently working on a comprehensive plan for the entire city of
Augusta-Richmond County. He resides in Boston.
Mr. Shield will give an overview of the 2009 Master Plan for Augusta
and North Augusta , an area which many county citizens know well. This
most intriguing and ambitious plan has the potential to transform the
area straddling the Savannah River , as well as to energize development
throughout the Aiken-Augusta Metropolitan Area. Seeing this plan and
discussing it with its author will provide Edgefield County citizens
with the opportunity to gain an appreciation of the value of master
planning.
