Pistol stolen during armed robbery in Edgefield

web posted February 24, 2007

EDGEFIELD – An Edgefield woman escaped injury during a strong-armed robbery that took place on Morange Street in Edgefield. The woman is said to have been approached by a man and an argument ensued. The man then snatched the woman’s pocketbook knocking her to the ground and took a 9 mm pistol from her purse and fled the area in a red vehicle.

Edgefield Police spotted the man walking away from a nearby apartment complex noting a car matching the description was parked at the complex. When the man saw the officer he ran and was able to elude arrest for the moment.

Police began setting up a perimeter to locate the man when a tip led to another apartment complex where the man was hiding out. Police converged on the apartment and took Ronnie Rouse35, of Morange Street, Edgefield, into custody at gunpoint.

Once in custody Rouse was asked to tell police where the gun was located since he did not have it on his person at the time of arrest. At first Mr. Rouse told the officer’s the gun was left on the scene, but later told officer’s of the true location. Behind the apartment they were at and close to the playground, police reports indicate.

Mr. Rouse was transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center and booked on charges of unlawful possession of a weapon and armed robbery, allegedly with a deadly weapon. He was released on Friday on a $5,000 bond.

The woman was uninjured in the attack. Mr. Rouse apparently was upset due to the woman brining his clothes and dropping them off at his father's house police reports show. The victim and Mr. Rouse were familiar with each other.

Incident date 2/21/07
