Firemen save Edgefield home

web posted February 24, 2009
Below: An unidentified fireman fights the fire as he enters the rear door
EDGEFIELD – A small kitchen fire almost spread throughout a Morgange Street home Monday just after noon after it grew out of control and the elderly woman was forced to escape the home. The 911 call brought the Edgefield Fire Department racing to the scene to find smoke rolling out of the open front door and the eaves of the roof.

As firefighters were laying down hoses the fire was consuming a wall area in the kitchen and “licking the ceiling”, one fireman said. After donning protective gear and air packs the firemen made entry into the home from the front and back doors and were able to extinguish the fire in a matter of a few minutes before it reached the attic area.

The kitchen suffered heavy damage and other parts of the home suffered smoke and water damage.

Firefighters worked the scene for a little over an hour to clear the residence of smoldering debris and smoke. The woman was not able to return to the home but was helped by several family members who arrived on the scene.
