Edgefield
man sent to MCG after back hoe accident
web posted February 25, 2006 EDGEFIELD – An Edgefield man was found buried in the mud after a backhoe he was working on overturned Friday night. Edgefield Fireman Ken Durham said the man, who was unable to walk without crutches, was working with the backhoe when it overturned around 7:00 pm. The man said he was able to jump from the tractor to avoid being trapped underneath. However, unable to walk, he was only able to crawl in the muddy water surrounding the worksite. A friend of the man became concerned when he did not return and went to check on him around 9:00 pm. That is when he found the man buried in the muddy water and called 911. The Edgefield Fire Department and Edgefield County Deputies arrived on the scene a short time later and began rescue operations. Mr. Durham said the worksite was “a mile to a mile and a half down a dirt road,” and then further down a muddy area where the man was working. Rescuers were unable to get rescue vehicles down to the scene due to the mud. “We got a four wheel drive truck that was open in the back down there and placed him on a back board and took him to the ambulance,” that was waiting near the scene Mr. Durham said. The man was uninjured from the accident but suffered from hypothermia due to lying in the muddy water for almost two and a half hours. “He said he tried to cover himself with mud to stay warm,” Mr. Durham said. The man was transported to MCG and treated for hypothermia. His condition is unknown at this time. For
