Expired Tag Ends in Drug Bust

web posted February 26, 2014
Below: Raymond Crouch Jr. and Danarius Garrett

EDGEFIELD For the second time in the past week, a simple traffic stop has resulted in a drug bust with over a quarter pound of marijuana, cash and open beers being seized. Three of the four in the car were charged and two were arrested. One of those charged was a juvenile who was turned over to his parents after the incident. It all started after a Sheriff's Deputy reported a car with an expired tag at a store on Main Street in Edgefield Saturday evening to Edgefield Police.

When the officer arrived he spotted the car driving away from the store and conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Main and Mims Streets. The four occupants were observed moving around a lot which drew the officer's attention and additional officers arrived. The occupants were ordered to put their hands up with all but the front seat passenger complying. After a second demand the passenger complied.

The driver, Raymond Stanford Crouch Jr., 21, was asked to step to the rear of the vehicle and was told the reason for the traffic stop. When asked for drivers license, registration and insurance he could not produce any. When asked if he had anything on his person officers should know about he stated he had marijuana in a container on his key ring. When it was opened the officers found the drugs and placed Crouch under arrest.

The other passengers were removed from the car one by one. The front seat passenger, identified as Danarius Montrell Garrett, 22, was found to be in possession of over a quarter pound of suspected marijuana, a digital scale and empty clear plastic baggies. Garrett was also taken into custody.

The juvenile was found to have a little over 4 grams of suspected marijuana and was issued a summons for simple possession and was released to his parents at the Edgefield Police Department.

The other passenger, a 22-year-old woman from Augusta, was found to have nothing in her possession and was released without charges.

In all, police confiscated 4.7 ounces of marijuana, $273 in cash, two open containers of beer (belonging to Garrett and Crouch) and two cell phones.

Garrett is the only of the four charged with a felony of possession with intent to distribute marijuana due to the quantity he was carrying.
