Health Fair exceeds attendance expectations
web
posted February 27, 2009
EDGEFIELD – The
Edgefield County
Hospital’s Health Fair on Thursday was a tremendous success as county
residents swarmed to take advantage of free screenings, health advice,
and garner information on preventative measures to promote heart
health. “I would say the most ignored symptom of heart attacks would be
a shortness of breath during activity,” Dr. Gregory Eaves, of Aiken
Cardiovascular Associates said. “Most people will just relate it to
getting older.” That is not a good idea he said.
“Most people associate a heart attack with the classic symptoms of an
elephant on the chest,” Dr. Eaves said, but ignore more subtle
indications of possible problems such as indigestion or unusual
discomfort that can be in the back, arms, neck, and jaw. “Dr. Eaves
said if you are feeling an unusual pain and want to discount it, “if
the thought crosses you’re mind that it might be a heart attack, go to
the emergency room.”
The sooner medical treatment can be started the less damage the heart
will sustain in such instances. Many heart patients show signs of
previous heart damage before seeking treatment. “The faster we can get
the blood vessels open the less damage is done,” Dr. Eaves said.
Although the heart was the main focus of the health fair it was not the
only issue addressed by the medical staff at the Edgefield County
Hospital. Free cholesterol screenings were available to the first 25
people to register and that was accomplished within the first half
hour, Sharon Fay and Lynn Rearden said as they registered the constant
flow of those attending the event.
On hand were Doctors and health providers from across the CSRA as well
as fitness trainers from Gold’s Gym, who instructed the young and old
on how to exercise properly. The halls of the hospital were teeming
with activity as attendees made their way through the different tables
picking up pamphlets, asking questions, and learning more way to stay
healthy.

Edgefield County Hospital Lab, were busy providing several screenings
including blood sugar and cholesterol. Their table outside the lab saw
a constant flow of those taking advantage of the services offered.
The hospital’s Director of Nursing, Cheryl Faust, organized the event
which also included the exhibit of the MCG Flight team and their
helicopter which was on display at the hospital.
