Women in Unity building burglarized twice in three weeks

web posted March 2, 2010
EDGEFIELD – The Women in Unity building was the scene of a burglary Saturday, and for the second time inside of three weeks. Founder and Executive Director Essie Nicholson said Monday the losses, now totaling over $2,500, would not be covered under their insurance. A worker arriving on Saturday morning to print off programs for a fundraiser later in the day found the computer missing and called 911.

“We’re usually not here on Saturdays,” Ms. Nicholson said, “but we were doing a fundraiser because there are not grants right now, and when she (the worker) came in the computer was gone.”

The person or persons broke out a window in the back of the home converted into the after school program the group provides and took two Dell computer systems including computers, wiring, mouse, keyboards, and flat screen monitors. “They had unplugged this one,” Ms. Nicholson said pointing to her computer, “but they didn’t take it for some reason.”

One of the computers served the after school students and the other was an office computer and were valued at $1,500. A fireproof safe was taken but was discovered behind a house next door.

Ms. Nicholson said it was hard for the organization to recover from such losses with a tight budget of funds provided by donations. “We work hard to help these kids,” she said, “We have six of our seventeen on honor rolls.” Ms. Nicholson said they are trying to give children reading, writing, and mathematic tutoring so they can do better in school.

“We’re trying to keep kids out of the system,” she said, adding that those who fall behind in early education tend to be dropouts in high school and as young adults turn to crime.

She handed me a copy of the most recent newsletter from the group which spoke to the previous burglary on February 9 in which two 32” flat screen televisions were stolen valued at over $1,000. “Women in Unity is an organization designed to help children in the community and yet we are at the mercy of those who are Godless and could care less”.

The group does not have the funds at this time to replace the stolen items and is seeking help from the community they serve. Anyone willing to donate can contact Ms. Nicholson at 803-637-2010 or mail donations to Women in Unity, PO Box 54, Edgefield, South Carolina, 29824.
