Plan to raise Edgefield Trestle progressing
web
posted March 2, 2010
EDGEFIELD – A plan to raise the trestle
that has been the focus of attention for many years in Edgefield may be
coming to a resolution very soon, Edgefield Mayor Ken Durham said
Monday night at the town’s regular monthly meeting. “It’s in design,
they told me it would probably be in April,” Mayor Durham said, “and we
will go from there.” According to the plans, the trestle will be raised
a total of three feet to prevent trucks striking the structure, which
caused the death of an Edgefield man in October of 2009.
“They (SC Department of Transportation) are going to leave everything
in place,” Durham said, adding that blocks would be put in place to
raise the overpass from 13 feet to 16 feet. “Out of all the scenarios,
we met with three or four of the DOT engineers, out of lowering the
road, raising the trestle, different things, that was the most cost
effective.”
Mayor Durham stated that Sen. Shane Massey has been working with him on
the matter but no final design plan was available at this
time.
The cost of the project is expected to be around $130,000 and will also
include a gentle slope being added to the walking trail that crosses
the overpass. Mayor Durham said additional information non the project
would be made available once it has been received from the state.
27-year-old Jeremy W. Jay, of Church Street, Edgefield, was killed at
the site when a tractor-trailer truck ignored warning signs and struck
the trestle dislodging his load that landed on
a truck driven by Mr.
Jay, killing him instantly.
