Snow causes wrecks, cancellations, and School opening delays

web posted March 3, 2010
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield and Johnston residents were inundated with snowfall starting around 3:30 Tuesday afternoon that made road conditions slippery causing a number of wrecks and forcing the Edgefield County Council to cancel the regular monthly meeting. Edgefield County Schools will delay their openings today for two hours due to the winter weather.

A cold light rain fell for most of the day across the county and then changed to sleet around 2:30 and then to snow about an hour later as temperatures fell to freezing in a matter of an hour. By 4 pm offices started letting employees head home and by 4:30 the roads began to show accumulations.

The Sheriff’s Dispatch began receiving calls of wrecks related to the weather conditions as the snow continued to fall. No injuries were reported.

While the northern part of the county was seeing heavy snow, the southern part - from Trenton and below - saw only a short period of sleet and then light rain continuing into the night.

With temperatures expected to fall well below freezing over night across the county, and the possibility of more precipitation into the early morning hours, roads could become icy and overpasses will certainly freeze. Drivers should take extra caution in the morning hours until temperatures rise above freezing.

No date was provided for the rescheduling of the County Council meeting.
