Strong armed robber gets 18 months after plea from Johnston Mayor
web
posted March 5, 2008
EDGEFIELD – A Johnston man accused in a
strong-armed robbery of a Johnston couple in a local convenience store
parking lot last May had his day in court Tuesday. Henry Lamond Rhodes,
27, was arrested after being identified from video surveillance cameras
that captured him committing the robbery.
Mr. Rhodes was
charged for following an older gentleman out of a Johnston store after
cashing a $400 check and then robbing him
in the parking lot. Rhodes was seen opening the door as the couple
sat inside of their car and reaching over the man to take the money
before fleeing the area.
Rhosed was later located and arrested.
Mr. Rhodes plead guilty to the charge in front of Circuit Judge James
W. Johnson Jr. who proceeded to sentence Rhodes to six years in prison
and then suspended the sentence to 18 months. Johnston Mayor Willie
Campbell spoke on behalf of Mr. Rhodes before the sentencing pleading
for leniency.
Mr. Rhodes, who has been held in the Edgefield County Detention Center
since his May 15, 2007 arrest, has already served ten months of his
sentence and will be released in just over four months.
Johnston Mayor Campbell was a foster parent to Mr. Rhodes.
