Sinkhole causing problems on Town Square
web
posted March 5, 2009
EDGEFIELD – Workers
for the Town of
Edgefield were busy Wednesday working to pull up part of the concrete
walkway on the town square after a sinkhole began to appear on Monday
and by Wednesday the ground beneath the sidewalk was collapsing.
Director of Public Works David Coleman said an engineer would be in
town to view the sinkhole and try to determine how serious the problem
is and the possible cause. The hole appeared just to the west side of
the Confederate monument that stands in the center of the square.
Edgefield Mayor Ken Durham said he believes the sinkhole could be the
caused by a well that used to be in the center of the square about 100
years ago. “They went out there with a probe about three feet long and
when it went into the ground they just about lost it,” Durham said.
Mayor Durham said he does not feel the Confederate monument was in any
danger at this time but he and the town will know more after it has
been studied by the engineer. For now the sidewalk in the area has been
removed and the area remains roped off to prevent anyone from walking
across the unstable ground and possibly getting hurt.
Mayor Durham, who is also president of Edgefield Construction, said if
it turns out to be the old well there are ways of repairing the damage
but did not offer an estimate on the cost.
