End of an era: Calliham Store and properties to be sold today
web
posted March 5, 2009
EDGEFIELD – The end
of an era in Edgefield
will come to an end today on the Court House steps when the auction of
the Calliham TV and Appliance store and other property
will be sold to
the highest bidder at 11 am. Fletcher F. Lawrence, Jr., of Greenwood
was granted the ability to sell the property and Special Referee Kathy
O. Rushton will be conducting the sale.
The sale could be postponed if, “Plaintiff, Plaintiff's attorney or
agent fail to appear on sales day, the property shall not be sold, but
shall be re-advertised and sold at some convenient sales day thereafter
when the Plaintiff, Plaintiff's attorney or agent is present.”
The property where the business stands was the subject of much debate
last year when the county showed an interest and made an offer to buy
the store for $425,000 for county offices and the anticipated expansion
of the Sheriff’s Office and jail.
However, after a very brief executive session on Tuesday night the
county council announced they would not be bidding on the property when
it goes up for sale.
The store has been in operation for half a
century.
