Driver Runs, Escapes from Traffic Stop

web posted March 5, 2013

EDGEFIELD – An Edgefield Police Officer on patrol spotted a white Ford van driving east on Jeter Street at 58 mph Sunday afternoon. When the driver saw the officer he sped up to 66 mph in a 35 mph zone trying to evade the officer. The officer turned around on the van in an attempt to make a traffic stop and the driver pulled over to the left side of the road and took off running into a wooded area.

Edgefield Police and Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies converged on the area in an effort to locate the driver to no avail. Unable to locate the 22-year-old black male that fled the scene, a check of the tag did not show the vehicle as being reported stolen.

A search of the van found an open container of beer and a mixed color Pit Bull puppy inside the vehicle. Paperwork listing the owner was found and officers made contact with the owners who stated they had reported the van stolen shortly after the suspect took it and refused to return it to them.

The owner continued to insist a stolen vehicle report had been filed with the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office. Edgefield Police requested a deputy from the CCSO respond to the owner's home to receive written statements that were to be faxed to the Edgefield Police Department.

Officers were able to identify the driver through the investigation and warrants were being compiled on Monday for speeding 66 in a 35 mph zone, open container and operating an uninsured vehicle.

An officer was able to make contact with the suspect by cell phone and he agreed to turn himself in at the Edgefield County Detention Center on Tuesday to face the above listed charges.

Additional charges could be filed if the suspect fails to report as promised.

The puppy was seized by Animal Control and the van was towed to the Edgefield Police Department for processing for fingerprints and photographs to record the evidence seized.

The name of the suspect is not being released until his arrest.
