$40,000 backhoe stolen from utility company

web posted March 6, 2007

EDGEFIELD – Monday morning a worker for the utility company currently laying water lines along the Highway 25 Bypass in Edgefield contacted the Edgefield Police Department to report the company’s backhoe was missing and appeared to be stolen. Workers left the heavy equipment on Thurmond Street on Friday at the end of the day.

Edgefield Police Officers photographed the tire tracks left from the backhoe and began gathering statements and evidence. The key to the tractor was not left in the ignition when the crew left for the weekend.

A nearby resident told police he saw a man get on the backhoe last weekend and turn the lights on then back off. Another man said he saw the tractor on Friday but did not notice it being there when he returned to his Bauskett Street home later in the afternoon.

The backhoe is described as 2001 John Deere 310SG and is yellow in color. The value of the tractor was stated at $40,000. If you have any information you are asked to contact the Edgefield Police Department by calling the dispatch office at 803-637-5337.
