Hotel sale confirmed

web posted March 9, 2007

EDGEFIELD – The Plantation House, the hotel on the corner of the Town Square and Penn Street, has been sold according to Dru Mims, the late Walter Mims’ grandson. “We have a contract on the building and we’ll be closing soon,” he said adding that it could take 30 to 90 days. The building was purchased by a West Virginia couple.

Mr. Mims said the couple plan to refurbish the building and that a restaurant may also be including in the plans. “They plan on opening it back up,” Mr. Mims said. An earlier deal on the building fell through last year with another buyer and the development company the couple owns was contacted.

The Plantation House, also known as the Village Inn, was built by the late Sen. Strom Thurmond’s grandfather Mr. Mims said, but was unsure of the date of its construction.

Another building owned by the Mims family, also located on the square, has also been sold. The building to the left of the old Baptist Association Building, which now houses the Edgefield Advertiser, will close by the end of this month Mr. Mims said. A real estate company will be locating in the building once it is remodeled by the new owner.

Mr. Mims said the proceeds from the building sales would be used to renovate the original Edgefield Advertiser building and the planned museum to be located upstairs. The Edgefield Advertiser is the oldest newspaper in South Carolina and has never missed an issue since its founding on February 11, 1836. Mr. Mims said he “hoped” that The Edgefield Advertiser would relocate to the original building after the renovations.

Suzanne Derrick, owner of The Edgefield Advertiser, was not at the paper’s office when attempts to reach her for comment were made on Thursday.
