Three announce candidacy at Republican Party quarterly meeting
web
posted March 12, 2008
EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County
Republican Party held their quarterly meeting Tuesday night and three
candidates announced their intentions to file for office. County
Councilman Everett Kitchens, who represents district two, said he would
be filing for his fourth term. Rodney Ashcraft, who had an impressive
showing two years ago as a write-in, said he would file to challenge
Mr. Kitchens. David Franklin said he would be filing for the new school
board district created last year. A challenge to unseat freshman
Republican SC Senator Lindsey Graham was also announced.
Mr. Franklin, who will be running in a non-partisan election for school
board, said he has been a resident of Edgefield County for five years
and lives in Mount Vintage Plantation. Among his credentials he listed
included being a veteran, a teacher at T. W. Josey in Augusta, and has
been involved with Fox Creek Charter High School. Mr. Franklin said his
main platform is accountability. That accountability, he said, would
reach from the school board, administration, and all the way down to
the parents and students.
Mr. Ashcraft, filing for the seat currently held by Mr. Kitchens, said
his main platform was “a policy of honesty, fiscal responsibility, and
political transparency.” Mr. Ashcraft said he believes the citizens of
the county should be able to obtain any information they request from
the county without roadblocks. He is a veteran and is very involved in
the county and attends an assortment of meetings each month. He said he
is serving on the economic development board at the present time. In
2006 Mr. Ashcraft ran a five day campaign as a write-in candidate
against Mr. Kitchens and received almost thirty per cent of the vote.
County Councilman Everett Kitchens said he intends to run to retain the
position. Mr. Kitchens said the county “overall” was in good shape.
Over the years there have been some “rough times”, he said, but
recently things have been "smoother". Mr. Kitchens warned, “Columbia
is attacking Home Rule,” and said if a lot of the things the state
legislature wants to do goes forward it would make county councils
useless. Mr. Kitchens said that the state was advancing on local
operations in a piecemeal fashion.
Tom Plowden spoke at the meeting and stated, “We have an incumbent
US Senator that needs to be brought back to South Carolina.” That
Senator being Lindsey Graham who, Mr. Plowden said, was “out of touch
with South Carolina”. Mr. Plowden said that South Carolina was known
for “stepping out” when it needed to and unseating Sen. Graham could
send a message across the nation. Even though Sen. Graham has served
only one term Mr. Plowden said he has failed the people of the state.
The candidate Mr. Plowden was supporting for the challenge is Dr.
Walter “Buddy” Witherspoon. Listed in the campaign material distributed
by Mr. Plowden was that Mr. Witherspoon’s top three issues are
immigration, taxes, and values. Issues Mr. Plowden said Sen. Graham has
failed to uphold.
Party Chairman Ralph McFarland said the Republican Party would be
hosting a “Meet the candidates” with a tentative date of May 17 from
noon until 3 pm at the Edgefield Town Gym. Other announcements can be
found at the Edgefield County
Republican Party website.
The next quarterly meeting will be held on May 9 at the Edgefield
County Council Chambers. The public is invited to attend any and all
meetings.
