Replanting of Edgefield Town Square gets underway Monday
web
posted March 12, 2008
EDGEFIELD – Many of the final touches of
the replanting of the Edgefield Town Square were finalized on Tuesday
when the Town Square Advisory Committee, Mayor Ken Durham, Suzanne
Holmes of the Clemson Extension Office, and Rankin Jolly of Rock Creek
Landscaping, met to sign off on the details. The work will begin this
coming Monday Mayor Durham said.
Among the many flower choices made were Knockout Roses would fill two
beds on the west side of the square around the light poles, four
gardenias will be planted at the base of the Confederate Monument in
the center, and assortment of day lilies, Japanese Soft Touch hollies,
annuals and other assorted blooming plants will round out the other
beds. Mr. Jolly stated fifteen foot Tuscarora Crape Myrtles would
replace the existing trees.
Some of the parking will have to be blocked off during the demolition
of the fountain and the removal of the existing trees, plants, and
grass. Mayor Durham said the replanting would take between two and
three weeks.
The existing fountain will not be replaced at this time and a flowerbed
will go in its place until a water feature can be agreed on by all. One
suggestion was to play on the connection to Edgefield pottery and use a
very large glazed pot at ground level that would spill out on rocks
below at ground level. Other possible water features are also under
review.
Mayor Durham said he has been approached by several people asking about
the current fountain. In order to sell the fountain it will have to be
advertised and people could then submit bids. “That’s the only way we
can do it,” Mayor Durham said.
