KKK coming to Edgefield?
web
posted March 12, 2010
EDGEFIELD – A planned KKK rally in
Clearwater has been abandoned and they have their sites set on
Edgefield for a rally in June. The proposed location is unknown.
“They’re already here,” Edgefield County Councilman Norman Dorn said
Wednesday night prior to the county council meeting. Vice-chairman
Willie Bright said he has no problem with the Klan marching. “They’ve
done it before, back in the 80’s, they walked right down Main Street.”
Councilman Bright said he was on the county council at the time and the
decision was made to allow the march. “We did ask the local media not
to report on it,” he said. “There weren’t five people that saw it.”
County Council Chairman Monroe Kneece did not offer a comment.
Edgefield County Administrator Alton Brown said no one has contacted
him about a rally as of Wednesday.
Edgefield Town Mayor Ken Durham said he heard the reports, however; no
one has contacted the town about a rally. “Right now I guess I don’t
have a comment,” Durham said. “Until someone contacts us I’m
considering it a non-issue.”
The Klan was planning to use a park in Clearwater but other functions
were booked making the rally have to be postponed. The only two county
parks in Edgefield County would be the Northside Park and Bettis Park.
Residents had differing views on the Klan holding a rally in Edgefield
County, but requested not to me named.
“I don’t think they should be allowed anywhere near Edgefield County,”
one woman said. “They’re a racist group.”
“Let ‘em come is all I can say,” said a local man. ”Its freedom of
speech and you are free to be as stupid as you want to be.”
“Why not,” a Johnston man said, “We got the NAACP meetin’ here, what’s
the difference?”
Attempts to reach Tim Bradly, reportedly the organizer of the rally,
were unsuccessful.
