GUILTY: Merriweather Sentenced to 25 Years in Murder Case

web posted March 12, 2013

EDGEFIELD – 34-year-old Phillip Anthony Merriweather entered a guilty but mentally ill plea in a special one day of General Sessions Court held Friday. Merriweather had been charged with the June 22, 2008, murder of his father, Raymond Merriweather, who was found badly beaten, his hands tied behind his back and then shot twice in the head with a .38 caliber pistol. The body was discovered when Merriweather's mother arrived at their Courtney Road home from church and found her husband dead.

The grisly crime scene was said to be one of the bloodiest in recent memory with blood found all over the house, presumably from the initial brutal beating as the father tried to fend off the attack. Raymond Merriweather was 60-year-old at the time of his death.

Although Merriweather had been originally charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and murder, he plead guilty to one count of manslaughter and was sentenced to 25 years behind bars. The assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature charge was dropped in exchange for the guilty plea.

He has served a little more than four and a half years at the Edgefield County Detention Center where he was held on no bond awaiting trial. The sentence included credit for time served.
