Former County Councilman Bill Vaughan Passes at 70

web posted March 12, 2013

EDGEFIELD – Former Edgefield County Councilman William "Bill" Vaughan died at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga., on Sunday. He was elected to the County Council in November of 2000 following a citizen revolt against county zoning in which two of three seats targeted by the group were taken. Vaughan was also a Navy veteran and retired from Aiken Electric Cooperative after 33 years of service.

"The news came as a shock," Edgefield Daily founder Roy Blackwell said. "Bill was an active leader in the Concerned Citizens of Edgefield County (CCEC) starting in 1998 and continued to support private property rights even after elected."

Vaughan served a single term as the representative for the Westside District (Dist.2).

"Bill was the watchdog of the county council," Blackwell said. "He was a good friend and a selfless public servant. He will be greatly missed."

Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, March 12, at 2:00 P.M. at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home with burial at Sunset Gardens Memorial Park.
