17 year-old Moten guilty, sentenced to 15 years for shooting

web posted March 13, 2007

EDGEFIELD – Toreeze Marquel Moten, 17, plead guilty to assault and battery with the intent to kill in the August 1, 2006 shooting of a 19-year-old man near the County Line Fire Station. Three other charges, including possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and a minor in possession of a weapon, were dropped. Judge Johnson took the guilty plea just before the trail was about to begin and sentenced Moten to fifteen years in prison.

Due to the severity of the violent crime Mr. Moten will have to serve eighty-five percent of his sentence, or twelve years and nine months with credit for time served since his August arrest. He has been held in custody on a $100,000 bond since that time.

The 19-year-old man shot by Mr. Moten recovered from the bullet that entered his back and exited through his chest. He was flown from the scene of the shooting in an AirMed helicopter and treated at the MCG Trauma Unit in Augusta. He, along with his brother who witnessed the shooting and his mother, were at the Courthouse for the trial along with several other witnesses set to testify against Mr. Moten.

The gun used in the shooting has not been recovered and Mr. Moten, even after admitting guilt, is not cooperating with authorities in their ongoing efforts to find the gun.

Due to the intense heat on the day of the shooting, the two Edgefield County EMS workers that treated the victim on the scene began to show signs of overheating and a short time later both were being treated by First Responders until additional EMS personnel and another ambulance could arrive and transport them to be treated at University Hospital. They recovered and were released the same day.
