Historical Society seeks $70-$80K for statue of “Founding Father”
web
posted March 15, 2010
EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County
Historical Society has issued a letter seeking donations towards a
proposed endeavor to place a statue of Arthur Simpkins, otherwise
regarded at the “Father of Edgefield County”. According to the letter,
Simpkins donated the 2.25 acres to the “Publlick Lot”, now known as the
Edgefield Town Square which housed the first County Courthouse of
Edgefield County some 225 years ago.
Simpkins, a prominent figure in Edgefield at the time (1742-1826), was
instrumental in the founding of the town and the county, the January
25, 2010, letter released by the Historical Society said.
The cost of the project is expected to run between $70,000 and $80,000
with the statue being placed at the History Wall located adjacent to
the County Courthouse on Jeter Street.
The Historical Society hopes to raise $30,000 from descendants of Mr.
Simpkins, $20,000 from the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor,
and $15,000 each from the Town of Edgefield and the Edgefield County
Council.
It is hoped the Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society will
co-sponsor the endeavor, the letter signed by Mary Altalo stated.
