Local cutting horse trainer takes win at NCHA Eastern National
Championships
web
posted March 16, 2010
JACKSON MS – Eddie Braxton, of Edgefield,
S.C., and cutting horse Mississippi Cat, owned by Vick L. Etheridge of
Corinth, Miss., scored 225 points to win the $3,000 Novice Horse class
and a check for more than $7,000 at the NCHA Eastern National
championship on March 11.
Owner Vick L. Etheridge bought Mississippi Cat as a yearling at a
Western Bloodstock Horse Sale in Fort Worth, Texas, and Braxton began
training him to cut as a 4-year-old. Etheridge said Braxton was a
perfect match for his horse.
“We finally got Eddie and Mississippi Cat together, and it was just
kind of a match made in heaven,” said a delighted Etheridge.
“We’ve had some awful good runs, but not in a big venue like this.
Tonight he’s put it all together, and we just couldn’t be more
thrilled.”
Braxton said Mississippi Cat has been developing his technique, working
lower to the ground as he did for this run. He said the gelding
has always stopped and worked his front end really well. He also
said Mississippi Cat has an extraordinary ability to read cattle.
“A lot of horses can read a cow, but this horse can get inside a cow’s
mind,” said Braxton. “He can draw that cow to him.”
Braxton showed Mississippi Cat the previous night in the $10,000 Novice
finals to no avail, having drawn first after a cattle change. He
and his crew studied the cattle, chose four options, and Braxton cut
three of them. He said it was like riding a different horse from
one night to the next.
Mississippi Cat, a 5-year-old out of High Brow Cat, has earned more
than $35,000 to date. It came as no surprise that Mississippi Cat
put on a crowd-pleasing show for the win.
“He just mesmerized everybody in the building,” said Etheridge.
“Right now we’re ecstatic.”
NCHA holds two National Championships each spring, one each at a
location in the eastern and western United States. The top ten
qualifiers in each of the 12 NCHA classes from each area and each
affiliate are eligible to compete. To encourage local
participation, eligible contestants may compete at either or both
contests.
The sport of cutting has roots in Western ranching traditions, where
good horses were a necessity for everyday ranch work and cattle
handling. The National
Cutting Horse Association was formed in 1946 by a group of cowboys and
ranchers, who wanted to promote cutting competition, standardize rules
and preserve the cutting horses’ Western heritage.
Today, the Fort Worth-based NCHA represents more than 21,000 people and
oversees more than 2,200 NCHA-approved shows with more than $43 million
in total prize money awarded annually.
