13-year-old Trent Miller finishes in top 5 of 2.4 mile Shamrock Run
web
posted March 17, 2008
EDGEFIELD – The
Second Annual Shamrock Run
was held Saturday with the largest group of entrants participating.
Organizer Kerry Klein said 145 people entered this year’s event. “The
weather was great and we had a great turnout”. The 2.4 mile run / walk
got underway at 11 am at the Bi-Lo on Columbia Road in Edgefield and
ten minutes and thirty-eight seconds later Sammy Nyomongo (above)
crossed the
finish line at the Edgefield Town Square to the applause of spectators.
Mr. Nyomongo won the
event last year and received the grand prize of
$500 for his repeat effort this year. Orinthal Striggles placed second
for the second time in the event with a time of eleven minutes and six
seconds and newcomer Larry Evans finished third with a time of eleven
minutes and eleven seconds. 13-year-old Trent Miller (pictured left) of
Edgefield
finished fifth with an impressive time of fourteen minutes flat.
After the race participants and attendees were treated to an assortment
of live entertainment, green beer, and other goodies offered by local
businesses.
The Edgefield County Law Officer’s Association, sponsor of the Jimmy
Shay Memorial Fishing Rodeo held each May, drew Forrest Haltiwanger of
Johnston as the winner of the $200 Wal-Mart gift card during the event.
Edgefield Mayor Ken Durham, who also participated as a runner in the
event finishing 31st with a time of twenty one minutes and one second,
said he was pleased with the participation and thanked Ms. Kline and
others who contributed to make the race a reality. “I think they all
did a great job,” Mayor Durham said and asked the crowd to give Ms.
Kline and her staff a round of applause before presenting the winners
with their prize money.
The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office participated this year with a
team of runners from the Narcotics Division, Investigative Division,
and Animal Control. Five members of the Strom Thurmond Track Team also
participated.
Ms. Kline said next year’s event would include non-cash prizes for
additional divisions for youth and other classifications to be
determined at a later date. “This is only the second year and we are
still sorting out the bumps,” Kline said. The total amount of money
raised for the American Heart Association was not available on Sunday.
A report will follow when the information is released.
The winners of the race are pictured below in order right to left: Sammy Nyomongo 1st place, Orinthal
Striggles 2nd, and 3rd place winner Larry Evans
