Shamrock Run Draws Hundreds to Edgefield - CORRECTION

web posted March 18, 2013

EDGEFIELD – The 7th Annual Shamrock Run/Walk was held Saturday morning with events kicking off around 10 am followed by the race at 11 am. "The weather is beautiful today," Kerri Klein, the event's founder said as she worked a feverish pace to make sure everything went off without a hitch - and they did. 223 participants signed up to make the 2.4 mile trek from Bi-Lo to the Edgefield Town Square. C. Dwight Allen, 35, crossed the finish line first with a time of 13:05 with Hammond Manly, 15, one step behind with a time of 13:06.

Nina Yonce was the first female fiBarbara Jolly nisher coming in 14th overall with a time of 18:39. Bob Mckie, 80, of Edgefield, was the last to cross the finish line with a time of 46:18.

The record for the race is 10:38 set in 2008 by Sammy Nyomongo.

Below are the top 10 finishers by name, age, and time:

C. Dwight Allen,     35, 13:05
Hammond Manly,   15, 13:06
Ed Williams,          15, 13:25
Parker Northrop,     22, 13:48
Robert Boland,       17, 13:49 (two-time winner, 2012, 2011)
Dustin Stewart,      18, 13:52
Brett Gossett,        NA 13:55
Lawrence Carrigan, 42, 15:30
Bill Manly,              48, 15:56
John Ryans,           63, 16:07

Following the race the crowd was entertained by the Shamrock Band, face painting, the "Leprechaun Lap" on the Town Square for children, vendors and people lined up at the dunking booth to take a shot at dunking Edgefield Daily's founder Roy Blackwell at noon.

"It was all in good fun," Blackwell said. "I got wet and the Edgefield County Hospital Auxiliary got a lot of money from the short time I was in the booth."

This year's event was held in memory of Dr. Ned Nicholson and Dr. W.G. "Curly" Watson and all proceeds will go the Edgefield County Hospital Auxiliary.

Total funds raised will not be available until sometime Monday as well as individual grouping winners.
