The Purple Fence to Host Jazz & Blues Mini-Festival

web posted March 19, 2013

EDGEFIELD – Lovers of Americana music will have another reason to celebrate Spring Break week and “that little golf tournament across the river” this year, as Edgefield plays host to its first-ever Purple Fence Jazz & Blues Mini-Festival. The Purple Fence, a new visual and performing arts venue on the historic Edgefield Town Square, will
host the two-day festival on Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13.

Series badges go on-sale Monday, March 18 for $30, which includes admission to all three concerts of the mini-festival. Advance tickets can be purchased at the Purple Fence (102 Courthouse Square), Edgefield Discovery Center and Mercy Me, all on the Courthouse Square in Edgefield; at the Edgefield County Chamber of Commerce in Johnston; and at the officesof WKSX-FM in Aiken, 203 Laurens Street SW.

The Purple Fence Jazz & Blues Mini-Festival begins on Friday the 13th with a performance by blues guitarist Professor Bottleneck and harmonica great Frank Born. The energetic duo from Germany will stop in Edgefield as part of a whirlwind U.S. Tour. Showtime for this concert is 8 p.m. on Friday, April 12.

Born in 1948 in Germany in the aftermath of World War II, Professor Bottleneck (real name: Rolf Heimann) grew up listening to American country and rock-n-roll music. He spent his teenage years in India and in time, began his own musical career playing on the streets for tips and later, playing pub music in France. Professor Bottleneck specializes in bottleneck, lap steel and pedal steel guitar and has performed at international blues festivals in Germany and France, as well as Charleston and Florence (with friend and sometimes collaborator, piano great Shrimp City Slim).

Professor Bottleneck is joined by blues harp player Frank Born, and the duo perform surprising interpretations of blues classics and familiar jukes as well as original compositions. The two joined forces on “Rolling Bones,” a collection of acoustic blues that includes such titles as “Mailbox Blues,” “Bald-headed Woman” and “White Boy Singing.”

The Purple Fence Jazz & Blues Mini-Festival continues on Saturday, April 13 with a double bill of two artistically divergent groups, starting at 4 p.m.

The afternoon kicks off with homegrown blues by Augusta's own Dave Morgan & The Hollerers, who were recently selected to appear as part of the line-up of the Greenwood Blues Cruise in July. Fronted by the wailing harmonica and vocals of Dave Morgan, the Hollerers feature John Lloyd Stewart on lead guitar, Scott Guinn on bass and Dave Perper on drums. In addition to interpretations of classics by Muddy Water, Paul Butterfield, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Eric Clapton, this high-energy group spotlights such original compositions as “Feeding the Black Dog,” “Living In Yesterday” and “Tramp Stamp.”

The day concludes with the smooth yet funky sounds of Mike Frost Jazz, featuring gifted bass guitarist Mike Frost and saxophonist Lauren Meccia. Dave Brown on
keyboards and Mike West on drums round out the group. Frost, a student of Pat Martino and jazz great Jaco Pastorius, performs original jazz compositions in addition to covers of classics and have shared the stage with such artists as Jesse Colin Young, Esteban, the Gypsy Kings and more. Their CD recordings have included “Get
Frosted: Live at the Blue Horse,” “Riddle Me This?” and the Christmas CD, “Frosty Christmas.”
