Large barn destroyed by fire in Edgefield

web posted March 20, 2010
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield and Westside Firemen were called to a structure fire just after 2 pm Friday on the 100 block of Promised Land Road. When the first firefighters arrived they reported the large barn “fully engulfed” in flames. A large plume of black smoke could be seen from miles away.

The fire consumed the two-story barn which collapsed and left a burning pile of rubble that took firefighters over two hours to put out.

According to neighbors, a man was working on the property burning some trash and cleaning up debris. One woman stated she passed by the home earlier to pick up a child from school and saw the yard burning, but it appeared the man was overseeing the process. By the time she returned the roadway was blocked by fire trucks.

Another neighbor heard a noise and looked out and saw the barn in flames and called 911.

The Edgefield Fire Department arrived minutes after the call and requested mutual aid from the Westside Fire Department. With no fire hydrants nearby, fire truck tankers would shuttle water back to the scene until the fire was extinguished.

The barn was completely destroyed and there was no list of the value of the contents available.
