Candidates Begin Filing

EDGEFIELD With filing for elected positions opening this week, several expected candidates have either filed or announce they intend to file before the end of next week. At this time there is only one incumbent that has seen a challenger for the June 10 primaries.

Former School Board chair Sally Cooks (D-Bettis Academy) has filed to challenge 25-year incumbent Probate Judge Bobby Peeler this June. Peeler (D-Westside), has also filed for re-election. There is no Republican filed as of Thursday.

Other countywide offices that have been filed for are incumbents Arleen Traxler (Treasurer), Bill Gilchrist (Auditor), and Thurmond Burnett (Coroner). Burnett is the only Democrat in the field.

In County Council races the following have filed or announced their intent to file for re-election. No challengers have filed.

Dist 1: Norman Dorn (D) filed
Dist 2: Rodney Ashcraft (R) confirmed
Dist 3: Dean Campbell (R) announced
Dist 4: Betty Butler (D) filed
Dist 5: Genia Blackwell (R) announced

Bill Hixon, (R), has filed for re-election in the SC House 83 seat.
