Veterans Park needs to become a reality, Veterans Officer says
web
posted March 28, 2008
EDGEFIELD – Veterans
Affairs Officer John
Rikard Jr. says it is time for Edgefield County to have its own
Veterans Park and he has found the land, has the preliminary proposal,
and is ready to make it a reality. “We started on this about three
years ago,” Mr. Rikard said, but since the fire at the Church Street
offices, “we lost everything so I’m starting from scratch.”
The only piece of all the groundwork that survived was copies of
initial renderings. “They were at the (Edgefield) Town Hall when the
fire happened,” Mr. Rikard said. The renderings show a horseshoe
memorial park with monuments to veterans killed in action in every war
since World War l though the current Middle East War. The monuments on
the Edgefield Town Square cover only three wars. Mr. Rikard said though
the Veterans Park would duplicate those named in the new park, “we’ll
add one each for Panama, Viet Nam, and the current war.”
One of the ideas to raise funds needed would be to sell bricks with the
names of veterans that would be incorporated into a wall. “Most of the
time they are put on the ground to walk on and you have to look down to
read the names,” Mr. Rikard said.
Putting them in a wall would make them easier to read and would be more
respectful than having people walk on them. “These are just some
initial ideas,” Rikard said, “if the committee wants to place them as a
walkway that’s where they would go.”
In the center of the park would be flags from each branch of service
surrounding an American flag in the middle.
The park would be on land on the corner of Pickens Street and Highway
25 that the Town of Edgefield has agreed to donate if the plan comes
together Edgefield Mayor Durham said. The location is ideal Mr. Rikard
said due to the traffic that passes the location and the ease in
finding it from a map. Mr. Rikard said the town would assume the upkeep
of the grounds when it was completed.
Mr. Rikard said he is ready to start forming the committees needed to
get the project going and is asking anyone willing to serve to contact
the Veterans Affairs Office at 803-637-4012.
Mr. Rikard said he is also looking for volunteers to serve on a
committee for the Veteran’s Day Program that is held at Strom Thurmond
football field. “The fireworks are the biggest expense,” Rikard said
estimating the cost at around $4,000 based on past events.
The Veterans Program would be scheduled for either Saturday November 8
or 15. Veterans Day falls on Tuesday, November 11.
