Authorities unsure of role with illegal aliens web posted March 29, 2007 EDGEFIELD – A series of arrests in Edgefield has many questions being raised about possible illegal aliens and forged identification. The recent event began on Sunday when an Edgefield Policeman stopped a car that was following too closely and discovered the man had no drivers’ license and did not speak English. He eventually presented a Rhode Island ID that had his information on it but the number came back to a 17 year old woman. At that time police arrested Rony Adonay Urbina, 26, of the 1000 block of Washington Road, Augusta, and charged him with following too close, improper vehicle license, operating an uninsured vehicle, seat belt violation, and forgery. The license plate and vehicle identification number did not match with information provided on a registration. The car was impounded. The next day a man came to the jail to obtain Mr. Urbina’s release he presented a Rhode Island ID as well. A check of the ID also came back with forged information. Officers arrested Virgilo Fortin, 30, also showing the same address as Mr. Urbina. He was charged with forgery. A short time later another man, Alberto Delgado, 27, also of Washington Road, was arrested after being stopped and presenting an ID from Costa Rica. He was arrested on a charge of no drivers license and his vehicle was towed from the scene. Magistrate Brenda Carpenter said the situation was a familiar one for the court system. Until an illegal alien commits a felony the federal authorities do not become involved for deportation. The stated requirement is that there must be forty illegals housed in an area before immigration authorities will transport the aliens for further investigation at a federal facility another source stated. With locals inmates in the Edgefield County Detention Center housing suspected, or known illegals, becomes almost impossible due to the numbers of those arrested. As a result illegal aliens are released while legal residents are housed in the county jail system. For
