Libertarian Files for Probate Judge

web posted March 31, 2014

EDGEFIELD With less than an hour to go before the books were to close on filing for elective office, Attorney Kevin Duane Beck threw his hat in the ring as the third candidate for Probate Judge Sunday morning. Beck filed as a Libertarian, skipping over the usual Republican or Democrat party label. "I identify as an Independent," Beck said, and more closely affiliates with the Libertarian Party.

Beck is an Edgefield County native and graduated from Wardlaw Academy. From there he attended the College of Charleston and graduated with a degree in Political Science and Communications with a minor in American Studies. He then attended the Charlotte School of Law and graduated in 2011 and passed the Bar later that year.

He has been in private practice since then and has handled criminal defense, Family Court and other legal work.

Filing as a Libertarian not only assured him a spot on the November ballot, it also placed his filing fee at zero. Filing fees to run as a Democrat or a Republican is just over $1,700.

Beck will be facing off against a Democrat opponent in the November General Elections. Currently 25-year veteran Probate Judge Bobby Peeler will face off against former School Board Chair Sallie Cooks in the June 10 Democrat Primary. No Republican has entered the race and filing has closed.
