Edgefield Police have alleged attempted killer in custody
web
posted April 1, 2008
EDGEFIELD –
Edgefield Police have a man in
custody that they have been seeking since July 2, 2003. Sammie Bowman,
48, was arrested by Aiken County authorities and turned over to
Edgefield Police late Friday. Mr. Bowman has been charged with assault
and battery with the intent to kill after a stabbing incident on Circle
Street five years ago.
According to police reports the then 41 year-old victim was preparing
to go to work when Mr. Bowman came to the woman’s house around 2 pm.
The two spoke and the woman told police she told Mr. Bowman she did not
want to see him anymore. She went back into the house and Bowman,
reports state, began knocking on the doors.
While the woman was ironing a shirt before work Mr. Bowman appeared at
the back door and the woman let him in and the two began to argue.
According to the report Mr. Bowman is alleged to have told her, “I love
you, and I will kill you before I let you go.”
A short time later Bowman produced a knife from the kitchen and stabbed
the woman three times in the back. The woman told police that the
handle broke and the knife was stuck in her back. Bowman is then
accused of taking the knife from her back and helped the woman into the
shower to try to clean up the blood. With the bleeding continuing he
called 911 and fled the scene, reports state.
The woman was taken by ambulance to the Edgefield County Hospital where
she was treated for her injuries and later released. A warrant was
issued for Bowman’s arrest and he evaded police for nearly five years.
Police said Bowman has moved around the southeast over the years and
may have been in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina before his
capture.
Bowman is currently being held at the Edgefield County Detention Center
on a $50,000 surety bond. No court date was available.
