Hit and run driver charged with attempt to kill
web
posted April 7, 2009
EDGEFIELD – The driver arrested in a
weekend hit and run early Saturday morning on Promised Land Road that
left a pedestrian injured has been identified as Tonio Lydell Collins,
21, of Edgefield. Collins was arrested at his home shortly after the
incident took place and was charged with assault and battery with
intent to kill.
The 25-year-old man Collins struck was complaining of back, neck, and
leg pain while being immobilized on a backboard after being struck and
found lying in the ditch. He was taken to the Edgefield County Hospital
by ambulance and then flown to the MCG Trauma Center in Augusta. His
injuries were not considered to be life threatening, though no update
was available Monday.
According to witnesses, Mr. Collins and the injured man were in a
physical altercation at the Promised Land Road home when Collins got in
his vehicle and left the scene, drove down the road and returned.
Witnesses told deputies that is when Collins ran off the road in order
to strike his victim and then fled the scene.
Incident reports state deputies found tire tracks off the road and into
a small ditch where the man was standing when he was struck. The tire
tracks then return to the roadway and lead away. The tracks, incident
reports state, matched those of the vehicle Collins was driving at the
time. There was also mud found on the truck, a broken piece off the
bumper, and “what appeared to be hand prints down the side of the
vehicle.”
Mr. Collins told deputies he was leaving the home and the victim jumped
in front of his vehicle in an attempt to stop him and was struck.
Collins was transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center and
booked into custody. He was released later Saturday afternoon on a
$50,000 surety bond.
The case is still under investigation.
