Tompkins Library wants county revenues, but skips out paying into them
web
posted April 9, 2009
EDGEFIELD – While the Tompkins Library
supporters were standing before the county council Tuesday night
seeking money from the county, it seems they were avoiding paying their
fair share to the county. For over a year they have been involved in a
construction project in the basement, or what is to be a basement, of
the building. Moreover, they have been doing it without the required
permit from the county or proper inspections.
A check with the Edgefield County Building and Planning Office on
Wednesday confirmed the work has been ongoing with no permit. Building
Director Mike Reed said he was unaware of the project until it was
brought to his attention and his office would be visiting the Tompkins
Library to inspect the work that has been taking place and make the
group purchase the permit, at double the normal price.
The double fee is for engaging in the work without the proper fees
being paid upfront Mr. Reed said, doubling the fee is similar to a fine
and the fee could go even higher.
EdgefieldDaily.com was tipped to the un-permitted work by readers who
oppose the county’s funding of the Edgefield Civic League / Tompkins
Library though they use the facility. More so-called “secrets” claimed
are currently being investigated.
