 Edgefield man arrested on sexual assault charge web posted April 13, 2007 EDGEFIELD – An Edgefield man has been arrested and charged with criminal sexual assault after a report of a tenant claiming she was assaulted by her landlord in her bedroom. According to police reports the woman stated the assault took place last month when the landlord came to her home and entered her bedroom while she was in bed and shut the door. The woman’s daughter allegedly let the man into the home while the woman was asleep in bed. According to police reports, the woman stated James Robert Hooper, 69, of Edgefield, entered her bedroom and pulled the covers off her exposing her partially naked body before assaulting her. Statements to police indicate she asked Mr. Hooper if he was going to rape her. The woman stated she did not call police at the time because Mr. Hooper claimed he had “connections in this town” because he was a “bondsman and a preacher, and a landowner”. However, after speaking to family members they encouraged her to contact police. The woman claimed that every time she refused Mr. Hooper’s sexual advances he would raise her rent $25 a month. The Edgefield Police Department initiated an investigation and obtained a warrant for Mr. Hooper and arrested him on Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Hooper was charged with sexual assault and booked into the Edgefield County Detention Center around 7pm. He was released on Thursday on a $10,000 bond jail officials said.
