Child Molester Sentenced, Must Register as Sex Offender

web posted April 15, 2014

EDGEFIELD A Westside man accused of molesting a young girl under the age of 11 plead guilty to a lesser charge on Monday and was sentenced to prison and must register as a sex offender when he is released. Leymond Wesley Snodgrass, 34, plead guilty to a single count of a lewd act on a minor under the age of 16. Charges of criminal sexual conduct in the first degree (two counts) and disseminating harmful material or exhibiting harmful performance to minors were then dropped in exchange for the plea.

Circuit Court Judge J. Cordell Maddox Jr. accepted the plea and sentenced Snodgrass to 15 years, suspended on 9 years in prison followed by an additional five years on probation. Upon release, Snodgrass will have to register as a sex offender so his whereabouts can be tracked by law enforcement.

Snodgrass was accused of multiple sexual attacks on the young girl before it was discovered and the Sheriff's Office was notified. Following their investigation, Snodgrass was arrested in March of last year.

He will be given credit for 390 days served while awaiting trial. Due to the charge, he will have to serve 85% of the 9 year sentence before being eligible for probation. He could have faced at least 30 years in prison for his crimes.
