Edgefield Police investigate alleged abuse of 81-year-old man at nursing home

web posted April 18, 2008
EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield Police Department is investigating an assault on a nursing home patient after receiving information of an 81-year-old patient at Trinity Health and Rehab Center claimed one of the staff “punched him in the eye”. The patient was taken to the Edgefield County Hospital for treatment of a badly bruised left eye on Tuesday and an official report was made to the Edgefield Police Department on Wednesday afternoon, which launched the investigation.

According to police reports, the nursing home worker claims the elderly man was trying to punch her and she pushed his hand and he hit himself in the eye. The elderly man suffered a large bruised area around, above, and below the eye.

The man’s daughter told police that her father has complained the staff worker was “always rude and mean to him,” reports stated.

The case is currently under investigation and the staff worker has been suspended by the nursing home administration. Initial written statements have been provided to police in the case.

Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter said his department is still in the initial phases of the investigation and will be seeking to speak with family members, the treating physician, and looking for any documented complaints against the staff worker or the patient. “We’ll know more in a day or two,” Chief Carter said.

Chief Carter did not indicate the direction of the investigation citing the need for more information to be collected before being able to provide any further comment. Charges, Chief Carter said, could range from misdemeanor simple assault to felony abuse of a vulnerable adult, which can carry up to a five year sentence, if the investigation led them in that direction. “We just don’t know right now,” Carter said.

A call to Trinity Mission went unanswered for comment. EdgefieldDaily.com will continue to follow this story as it continues.
