Burglaries, auto thefts overnight possibly related

web posted Apri 21, 2006

Below: Second stolen truck recovered off Highway 25
EDGEFIELD –  A routine a alarm call at a Johnston tire company at 1:00 am Thursday morning has the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office searching for a person which they believe not only burglarized a tire company and a nursery business, but has allegedly stolen two vehicles, crashing one at a home in Edgefield around 3:00 am.

An alarm company notified the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office that a business client’s alarm had been activated. When deputies arrived, the tire business, located on the 1800 block of Highway 191, appeared secure. Further investigation found two trailers used to store tires broken into and eleven tractor trailer tires had been removed from the storage trailers and rolled outside the fenced area. The person or persons cut a hole in the fence to gain access to the area. The tires were recovered.

While on the scene investigating officers spotted a white truck that was preparing to turn in the direction of the business but the driver quickly changed his mind and turned in the opposite direction. One deputy began to follow the truck for the suspicious activity. The truck continued to drive from Johnston down several of the back roads towards Edgefield. Once the truck returned to Highway 23 heading towards Edgefield the driver suddenly took off, turned off its lights and turned down Eastview Road.

The deputy lost sight of the truck and after going down Eastview Road and turning around he spotted the truck in the rear of a residence. The truck was driven across the front yard of the home hitting a tree and running over a satellite dish. The truck came to rest on a picnic table. It was still in gear with the motor running.

Unknown at the time, the truck had been stolen from a nursery business on the 2100 block of Edgefield Road near Trenton. Someone broke into the office of the business overnight, stole keys to two vehicles, and drove away with the white truck police located at the home on Eastview Road.

Thursday afternoon the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office had another truck reported stolen just a block over from Eastview Road. The blue Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck with a load of trash and a blue tarp in the back was taken from a residence on the 700 block of Columbia Road. The owner did not know when the truck went missing. Police put out a BOLO (be on the look out) for the truck shortly after 2:00 pm. About ten to fifteen minutes later the Sheriff’s Animal Control Officer found the truck in a small field next to a residence on the 2100 block of Edgefield Road, right across the street from where the first truck was stolen.

The Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the cases and believes they are all connected. Evidence has been obtained throughout the day from the multiple crime scenes.
